This year in the Office of the Provost, even as we define our mission and vision, continue with existing processes related to promoting the teaching and learning environment, we will focus much of our attention and efforts on two major initiatives that have as a central organizing theme “diversity and globalization”.

 

Developing a Walden University Research agenda.

 

Walden University has a well-established reputation for high quality graduate instruction, a key component of a successful graduate school. To be known for the quality and reach of our research is also a key component. Building on a strong base of research support initiatives such as dissertation and thesis rubrics, outstanding dissertation and thesis awards, faculty and student honoraria for peer-reviewed presentations and publications; student and faculty research funding, we will begin this year to work toward a goal—that we will be known for our social change research that is inextricably linked to our curriculum.

 

With our university mission of transformation, our applied, social change research focus, and our access to other institutions across the Laureate International Universities Network, we are uniquely poised to be known first and foremost for the quality and contributions the research emerging from our University.

 

Diversification and globalization of our faculty and our curricula to support students and the teaching and learning environment.

 

Faculty
Building on our excellent and strong cadre of full- and part-time faculty as well as our existing hiring, development, and evaluation strategies, in 2007 the faculty development leaders across the university (VP Faculty Development, colleges, and schools) will work together in collaboration with Human Resources personnel to articulate and implement a comprehensive process for faculty recruitment, hiring, engagement, development and evaluation strategy with emphasis on diversity of demographics, preparation, global reach, theoretical base, experience, teaching and research agendas.

 

Curricula
Consistent with a continuous improvement model, as we revise existing develop new programs through collaboration among faculty and  colleagues in other units in the organization, we will ensure that the new Walden Learning Model and the program hallmarks are infused across the curricula. In so doing, by both infusion and overt, explicit manifestation, we will offer curricula that, through innovative pedagogy, enhance cultural literacy and global perspective-taking; promote community engagement; foster research consistent with the social change mission of the University; and situate students for work in complex and diverse environments.

 

I look forward to meeting with students and faculty, both face to face at residencies and in virtual meetings, to hear your thoughts and ideas about these and other initiatives. 

Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.
