It was created for many purposes (to inform, to persuade, to sell, to present a viewpoint, and to create or change an attitude or belief).
Before you begin Internet surfing, take a minute to ask yourself what exactly you are looking for. Do you want facts, opinions (authoritative or just anyone's), reasoned arguments, statistics, narratives, eyewitness reports, descriptions?

The American Federation of Teachers. AFT is a 984,000-member union of public and professional employees, including public and private school teachers, paraprofessionals and school-related personnel (PSRPs), higher education faculty and professionals, employees of state and local governments, nurses and health professionals. The Pulitzer Prizes are annual awards for achievements in American journalism, letter, drama, and music. Now your students can learn about past Pulitzer winners, as well as the history of the awards through this official Web site. The main feature of this site is an archive of past Pulitzer-Prize winning works. Visitors will find photos, editorial cartoons, music clips, and the full text of all winning articles from 1995 to the present. The Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education. (ENC) has launched a new Web project titled Making Schools Work for Every Child, is a collaborative effort between ENC and the Equity Task Force of the National Network of Eisenhower Regional Consortia and Clearinghouse (NNERCC). The site is a resource for educators concerned about creating equitable classroom conditions in which every child can succeed at school. ERIC - Educational Resources Information Center
ERIC Document Reproduction Service. The ERIC Document Reproduction Service, is the document delivery component of the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC). ERIC is a nationwide information network designed to provide ready access to education literature. The ERIC database is the world's largest index to journal articles and documents in education, containing over 800,000 citations. Approximately one-half of the entries in the ERIC database (or 400,000 citations) relate to education documents. Identified by unique ED numbers, ERIC documents include a wide variety of resources such as teaching guides, research reports, bibliographies, issue papers, instructional materials, and test and evaluation instruments. EDRS makes these non-journal resources available to the public in microfiche collections as well as individually. Approximately 92% of the documents abstracted in ERIC are available from EDRS.

The Civil Rights Movement: A Black History Celebration. Another terrific interdisciplinary Web project from George Cassutto and his students. Ninth grade students posted over 20 separate pages offering information and perspectives on the Civil Rights movement. Explore the activities and format as inspiration for guiding your own students to master a topic by becoming experts and posting a Website. As the primary professional organization for teachers of mathematics in grades K-12, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has the responsibility to provide broad national leadership in matters related to mathematics education. The Fractal Microscope is an interactive tool designed by the Education Group at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) for exploring the Mandelbrot set and other fractal patterns. By combining supercomputing and networks with the simple interface of a Macintosh or X-Windows workstation, students and teachers from all grade levels can engage in discovery-based exploration. The program is designed to run in conjunction with NCSA imaging tools such as DataScope and Collage. With this program students can enjoy the art of mathematics as they master the science of mathematics. This focus can help one address a wide variety of topics in the K-12 curriculum including scientific notation, coordinate systems and graphing, number systems, convergence, divergence, and self-similarity.

Music Education
Musicians and students of music have "scored" with this set of lists of musical scores from the American Music Center Library. Great numbers of scores are listed by composer and instrumentation. Jazz scores have a special listing. If you're a member of the Music Center you can actually check out 20 at a time. Coaching Youth Sports. An electronic newsletter for Coaches, Athletes, and Parents. The purpose of this newsletter is to present information about learning and performing sport skills. This information comes mostly from the motor skill learning and sport psychology areas of the sport sciences. While the primary focus is on athletes in the 6-16 year age range, topics related to high school athletes may also be discussed. Science NetLinks. MCI, along with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, has created a website that is a useful tool for science teachers in the classroom. The Website lists a number of science-related websites that have been evaluated by esteemed scientists. Each website goes through a rigorous evaluation process in which accuracy, relevance, and overall quality are evaluated. Once a website has been approved by the board of scientists, a link and description of the site it is placed on sciencene links, and then categorized (as biological, physical, etc.) Teachers should feel confident using these websites in classroom activities, since they have been evaluated by other scientists and found to be accurate.

Al Bodzin's Home Page. Al's web page serves as a resource for K-12 educators, especially science educators. He is currently a recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship in Instructional Technology for Science Education at North Carolina State University. Al learned to incorporate technology into his biology teaching while a high school teacher in South Carolina. This is an exceptionally well-done page with links to Al's personal favorite sites (Nanoworld, Ocean Planet, & Classroom Connect) and to pages with selected links to a lot of "great sites" in biology, ecology, science, and K-12 education.

School Reform
New American Schools. New American Schools is a dynamic coalition of teachers, administrators, parents, policymakers, community and business leaders, and experts from around the country committed to improving academic achievement for all students. NAS works to change American classrooms, schools, and school systems using designs blueprints for reorganizing an entire school rather than a single program or grade level within it and by providing assistance to help schools implement these designs successfully. All NAS designs have been validated through extensive research and testing. Currently, over 700 schools in 30 states throughout the country are using NAS designs. Eleven school districts and groups of districts have made a commitment to put NAS designs in place in at least 30 percent of their schools by the year 2000. (Added 11/11/98 per M. Simon)

Old Colorado City Communications. National Science Foundation. Wireless Field Test for Education Project. This site is the publically available hub for reporting plans, progress reports, and test results related to the NSF Wireless Field Test for Education, the Mongolian Wireless Test Project, and the 1997-1999 Local History by Wireless Project. The Progress Reports section is the most active section. The Regulatory section contains public policy considerations.

Association for Educational Communications and Technology. The mission of AECT, "is to provide leadership in educational communications and technology by linking professionals holding common interest in the use of educational technology and its application to the learning process." Every year, approximately 1500 educators from across the United States and around the world convene to share ideas, discuss current issues, and present the results of their practices and research. AECT now boosts over 10 different divisions and 12 regional affiliates. Each division and affiliate have their own focus and flavor which means that there is something for everyone who attends the conference.

NASA... On the Cutting Edge is a series of interactive educational live shows that take students and educators on electronic field trips to laboratories, classrooms, NASA Centers, and remote sites across the country to experience science, mathematics, geography, and technology in real-world settings. Viewers will be able to see how the skills they are learning in school, including teamwork, cooperation, and commitment to excellence, are used by scientists, engineers, and other professionals every day.

The American Association of University Women is a national organization that promotes education and equity for all women and girls. Their commitment to these issues is reflected by the AAUW public policy program.
