M.S. in Education: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (Grades K–12); Elementary Reading and Literacy (Grades K–6); Elementary Reading and Mathematics (Grades K–6); Integrating Technology in the Classroom (Grades 3–12); Literacy and Learning in the Content Areas (Grades 6–12); Mathematics (Grades K–5); Mathematics (Grades 6–8); Middle Level Education (Grades 5–8); Science (Grades K–8)

  1. Bachelor’s transcripts from a regionally accredited school showing the degree conferred are required for admission.
  2. Admission requires at least two years of teaching experience or a teaching certificate.
  3. Telephone interviews with persons listed as reference contacts are conducted at the discretion of the faculty chair. 
  4. While an undergraduate GPA of 2.3 or better is a criterion for full admission, applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 2.0–2.29 may be eligible for conditional admission.
     

M.S. in Education (Educational Leadership)

  1. Bachelor’s transcripts from a regionally accredited school showing the degree conferred are required for admission.
  2. Admission requires at least three years of teaching experience and a teaching certificate.
  3. Applicants must submit a signed contract with a principal mentor who will support their internship activities throughout the program.
  4. While an undergraduate GPA of 2.3 or better is a criterion for full admission, applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 2.0–2.29 may be eligible for conditional admission.


Doctor of Education

  1. Master’s transcripts from a regionally accredited school showing the degree conferred, with a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, are required for admission.
  2. Admission to the Administrator Leadership for Teaching and Learning specialization requires applicants to be certified and have current and continuous administrative experience in the K–12 environment.
  3. Admission to the Teacher Leadership specialization requires applicants to have three years  teaching experience, teaching certification, and access to a classroom.
  4. Applicants for both programs must provide a goal statement (4–6 pages) including the following:
    • A brief professional introduction, including personal, educational, and instructional background.
    • A description of the applicant’s intent to instruct or administrate in an authentic learning environment throughout the duration of the program.
    • Three goals the applicant hopes to achieve by participating in the Ed.D. program that relate to the program content of collegial leadership and learning.
    • Teacher Leadership candidates must include:
      • Identification of current teaching environment in school.
      • History of content areas and grade level teaching experience.
      • Professional development experiences preparing them for doctoral study.
      • Research interests or topics related to inquiry in the classroom and/or school.
      • Willingness to conduct research in classroom or school to promote collegiality, data-driven decision-making, and involvement in teacher leadership. 
      • How research ties into school or social change. 
      • How research will affect educator or student learning and change in the school.
    • Administrator Leadership candidates must include:
      • Identification of current administrative environment in school.
      • History of development as an administrator.
      • Commitment to school change, restructuring, or renewal.
      • Professional development experiences preparing them for doctoral study.
      • Research interests related to inquiry into school change, renewal, or restructuring for collegial and/or collaborative school decision-making.
      • Willingness to conduct research in current school environment to promote and establish more collaborative administrative style, data-driven decision making and strengthen teacher leadership.
      • How research ties with school or social change.
      • How research will affect educator or student learning and change in the school.
  5. The Ed.D. program does not allow conditional admission.

NTU School of Engineering and Applied Science

  1. In general, admission requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited school.
  2. While an undergraduate GPA of 2.9 or better is a criterion for full admission, applicants with a bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science from an accredited institution in the United States (or equivalent from a foreign institution) and a cumulative GPA of 2.5–2.89 may be conditionally admissible. Applicants with degrees in other appropriate fields (e.g., physics, chemistry, math) and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.9 are also encouraged to apply. Applicants may submit a detailed outline of their relevant work experience, letters of recommendation, resumes, and other items that provide a clear understanding of their academic and experiential background and objectives. Applicants may be asked to provide Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, evidence of having passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, or evidence of registration as a professional engineer (P.E.) in certain cases.

Master of Business Administration (High-Tech M.B.A.)

  1. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in technology, engineering, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution, or the foreign equivalent.
  2. Applicants must have at least one year of work experience.

 

M.S. in Computer Engineering

  1. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from an ABET/CSAB-accredited program, an equivalent program from a regionally accredited institution, or the foreign equivalent.
  2. Applicants without undergraduate degrees in computer engineering will be required to complete Foundation courses prior to full admission to the program.

 

M.S. in Computer Science

  1. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science from an ABET/CSAB-accredited program, an equivalent program from a regionally accredited institution, or the foreign equivalent.
  2. Applicants without undergraduate degrees in computer science will be required to complete Foundation courses prior to full admission to the program.

 

M.S. in Electrical Engineering

  1. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program in the United States, a CEAB-accredited program in Canada, or the foreign equivalent.
  2. Applicants without undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering will be required to complete Foundation courses prior to full admission to the program.

 

M.S. in Engineering Management

  1. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in technology, engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited engineering program in the United States, a CEAB-accredited program in Canada, or the foreign equivalent.
  2. Applicants must have at least one year of technical work experience.

M.S. in Software Engineering

  1. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, or computer engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in an ABET/CSAB-accredited engineering program with a minor in computing systems, or the foreign equivalent.
  2. Applicants without appropriate undergraduate preparation in software engineering or computer science will be required to take Foundation courses prior to full admission to the program.

 

M.S. in Systems Engineering

Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in technology, engineering, or a related field from an ABET-accredited engineering program in the United States, a CEAB-accredited program in Canada, or the foreign equivalent.

 

School of Health and Human Services

 

M.S. Program in Nursing

  1. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in nursing (B.S.N.) or an associate degree or diploma from an accredited/approved school. 

  2. Applicants must have an active registered nurse (R.N.) license in the United States or its territories. International nurses must have the equivalent of a R.N. license in their home country.
  3. Applicants are required to submit a completed recommendation form from a faculty member or professional who is qualified to comment on their readiness for admission to and potential success in the program. For the policy updated 9/16/05, click here.
  4. While an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better is a criterion for full admission, applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 2.7–2.99 may be eligible for conditional admission.
  5. Applicants must be currently working as an R.N. in a nursing/health care setting. If not currently working, applicants must have practiced nursing within the last two years. 
  6. Graduates from associate degree/diploma programs must complete a minimum of 45 semester credits of general education courses: 

Communication (including one college composition course)

9 semester credits

Humanities 6 semester credits
Social/Behavioral Sciences 9 semester credits
Mathematics and Science (including anatomy, physiology, and microbiology) 15 semester credits
Introductory Statistics 3 semester credits
Electives 3 semester credits

Total

45 semester credits 

 


M.S. in Public Health (M.S.P.H.) and Master of Public Health (M.P.H.)

  1. Applicants must have completed one college-level course in mathematics with a grade of C or better. Applicants may also satisfy the mathematics requirement by presenting a score of 450 or above on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test’s quantitative ability section.

Ph.D. in Public Health

  1. Applicants holding a bachelor’s degree or a non-public-health graduate degree who are interested in a career in public health or a public-health discipline (e.g., epidemiology, sociobehavioral foundations of health, biostatistics, health policy and administration, environmental health), but have no professionally relevant experience, will be considered for admission.

  2. Applicants holding a bachelor’s degree or non-public-health graduate degree must have completed one college-level course in mathematics with a grade of C or better. Applicants may also satisfy the mathematics requirement by presenting a score of 450 or above on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test’s quantitative ability section.

Ph.D. in Human Services

  2. Applicants who have completed their master’s degree in the last two years are required to submit at least one completed recommendation form from a faculty member in that program who is qualified to comment on their academic performance. For the policy updated 9/16/05, click here.

  3. Admission to the Clinical Social Work specialization requires a master’s degree in social work with an interpersonal, direct, or clinical practice emphasis. While not required, students are encouraged to complete three years of post-master’s clinical social work practice before seeking admission to this specialization.

  4. Admission to the Counseling specialization requires a master’s degree in counseling, social work, family therapy, mental health nursing, divinity, or psychology. While not required, students are encouraged to complete three years of post-master’s counseling or interpersonal practice before seeking admission to this specialization.

  5. Admission to the Family Studies and Intervention Strategies specialization requires a master’s degree in couples and family therapy, sociology, social work, counseling, psychology, mental health or psychiatric nursing, public health, social or public policy, or cultural studies.

  6. Admission to the Criminal Justice specialization generally requires a master’s degree in criminal justice. Those with a master’s degree not in criminal justice may be admitted, but must take an alternate set of core KAMs to provide the Criminal Justice foundation.

 


Ph.D. in Health Services and Human Services—Applicants With Less Than Three Years of Professionally Relevant Experience

Applicants with less than 3 years of professional experience are eligible for admission to the General Program in the Health Services and Human Services Ph.D. programs, provided they meet all other admission requirements. Applicants who have not obtained three years of professionally relevant experience by the time they begin KAM V must conduct a field project for the application component of this KAM. The project may be either a research or professional field experience, but must otherwise address the usual specifications for the application component.

 

Ph.D. in Health Services students who, after program admission, have completed three years of professional experience relevant to one of the program’s specializations may, after completing their core KAMs and SBSF 8417, file a formal request, including an updated vitae, for admission to the specialization. These students are also required to focus the depth and application sections of their core KAMs on content related to their prospective specialization.

 

Ph.D. in Human Services students who, after program admission, have completed three years of professionally relevant experience prior to submitting their Intent to Declare a Specialization form will be considered for admission to a specialization. They must attach an updated curriculum vitae to the form to substantiate their additional, relevant experience.

School of Psychology

 

M.S. in Psychology and M.S. in Mental Health Counseling

  1. Applicants who have a bachelor’s degree in an area other than psychology or have a GPA of 2.5– 2.99, but have demonstrated improvement in performance as evidenced by scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), coursework taken within the last five years with a grade of B or better, and/or professional work experience within the last three years may be considered for conditional admission.

  2. Applicants who have completed their bachelor’s degree in the last two years are required to submit the name and contact information for a faculty member from that program who is qualified to comment on their academic performance.

 


Ph.D. in Psychology

  1. Applicants holding a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution are considered for admission. Master’s-prepared applicants must hold their graduate degree in psychology or a related field such as clinical social work, counseling, couples and family therapy, or human services. For applicants with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, admission to the Ph.D. program is premised on the ability to successfully complete a professional psychology doctoral program as demonstrated by the successful completion of Walden’s M.S. in Psychology with a research thesis and a GPA of 3.0 or better. Applicants with a master’s degree in a field unrelated to psychology may be considered for conditional admission.

  2. Applicants who have completed their master’s degree within the past two years must submit the name of and contact information for a faculty member from that program who is qualified to comment on their academic performance.

  3. A telephone interview may be required.

 


M.S. and Ph.D. in Psychology Programs—Conditional Admission Requirements

For applicants who do not meet the standards set for full admission, conditional admission to the master’s and Ph.D. programs in psychology may be granted. Applicants must successfully complete, with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better, the following graduate courses within the first three quarters of matriculation: Advanced General Psychology, Statistics I, and History and Systems of Psychology; or demonstrate successful completion of some or all of those courses from an accredited institution taken not more than 10 years prior to matriculation.

 

Post-Doctoral Certificate in Psychology

  1. A doctoral degree in psychology or a relevant discipline/specialization (e.g., clinical, counseling, general, health, or organizational psychology) from a U.S. school accredited by one of the regional accrediting associations or from a non-U.S. institution.

  2. Applicants who have completed their doctoral degree in the last two years must submit as a reference the name of and contact information for a faculty member from that program who is qualified to comment on their academic performance.

  3. Transcript(s) of doctoral and master’s degrees, or doctoral degree coursework completed to date.

  4. Three years of professional practice in a health, mental health, social services, or behavioral science setting.

  5. Goal statement.

  6. Completed application form.

  7. Application fee. 

  8. A telephone interview may be required.

 


School of Psychology—Non-Degree-Seeking Students

 

The School of Psychology offers courses to individuals who do not wish to enroll in a degree program but want to take courses for personal or professional reasons.* All university minimum requirements for enrollment apply. Non-degree-seeking students may complete a maximum of three courses in the School of Psychology; any additional courses must be petitioned to and approved by the School of Psychology assistant dean for student success. The following conditions also apply:

  1. Non-degree-seeking students can take courses based on availability (i.e., priority is given to Walden University matriculated students). *Note: Non-degree-seeking students will not be permitted to take PSYC 8000.

  2. Students can take a maximum of two Walden courses in any given term. 

  3. Students must meet the prerequisites for the course. For example, if Statistics I is a prerequisite for a course, the student is responsible for completing (with a grade of B or better) Statistics I prior to enrolling in that course.

  4. Prospective students who are interested in matriculating into the M.S. in Psychology program but who do not meet the minimum requirements based on their undergraduate GPA are strongly urged to take Advanced General Psychology and Statistics I as non-degree-seeking students, to demonstrate their ability to succeed in a graduate program. While successful completion of these courses does not guarantee admission, it will be considered in the admission decision.
